Chamomile ("Babounj" in Arabic)

Chamomile belongs to the genus Anthemis, Chamaemelum, Cladanthus, and Matricaria of the family Asteraceae. It is highly valued for its medicinal properties and is included in the FDA's GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list.

In Algeria, chamomile is one of the few wild medicinal plants that thrive in diverse soils and climatic zones, ranging from sub-humid regions near the Mediterranean coast to harsher environments.

Application Tips

  1. For Blond or White Hair:

    • Mix 3 drops of chamomile essential oil with 2 drops of lemon essential oil in a dose of shampoo.
    • Leave on the hair for a few minutes before rinsing.
  2. For Acne:

    • Dilute 1 drop of chamomile essential oil in 3–4 drops of vegetable oil.
    • Apply directly to pimples.
  3. For Aerophagia, Bloating, and Flatulence:

    • Dilute 1 drop of chamomile essential oil in 4 drops of vegetable oil.
    • Apply to the abdomen up to 3 times daily.
  4. For Skin Allergies:

    • Dilute 1 drop of chamomile essential oil in 4 drops of vegetable oil.
    • Apply to the affected area twice a day for 7–10 days.
  5. For Difficult Digestion:

    • Dilute 1 drop of chamomile essential oil in 4 drops of vegetable oil.
    • Massage onto the abdomen up to 3 times daily.
  6. For Insomnia:

    • Mix 7–10 drops of chamomile essential oil with 25 mL of a carrier oil (e.g., olive or sunflower oil).
    • Apply directly to the skin or diffuse the oil in a room to create a restful atmosphere.

Precautions for Use

  • Pregnancy: Avoid chamomile essential oil during pregnancy due to its estrogen-like action.
  • Dilution: Always dilute chamomile oil in a carrier oil before dermal application. Avoid sun exposure after application.
  • Drug Interactions: Chamomile essential oil may interact with aspirin or NSAIDs due to the presence of apigenin.
  • Patch Test: Test 2 drops of the oil on the inner elbow for 24 hours to check for allergic reactions.
